Listed in 1860 Census for Bledsoe County, Tennessee.
This family is listed in the 1840 and 1850 Census records for Hamilton County,
Indiana. According to family tradition, John Grayson (1442) and Sarah Fricks
Grayson and, their children moved from Hamilton County, Tennessee to Oachita
County, Arkansas around 1860. He is said to have brought $1500.00 in gold,
which he used to buy a large amount of land near Goodhope for $0.25 per acre.
He settled on this land. John and Sarah were both buried at the White Church
Cemetery, just across the county line a few miles west of Goodhope. There is
no marker at the graves, but an iron fence extended around the site until a few
years prior to 1970, when it fell into disrepair and was removed. John T.
Grayson had a brother, Thomas Grayson (2048) north of Chidester in the MissouriChurch area. Goodspeed's History of South Arkansas has two references to John
and Sallie Fricks Grayson. The first (Z.T. Grayson) says he was a sheriff in
Tennessee for several years. He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian
Church. He died in 1882 in his 63rd year, his wife died in 1873. He was a
mason, in politics, first a Whig, and afterward a Republican. He was a union
man in the Civil War. The second reference says that there were eight sons and
three daughters. Seven of the sons served in the confederate army. The 1880
census for Oachita County, Arkansas showed John T. Grayson living with his
daughter and son-in-law, James M. Douglas.WILL:Book A, p.46 (Ouachita Co Arkansas)
