575. Sanford Franklin GRAYSON

The following account was researched and prepared by members of the Grayson
Family Association, St. Charles, Illinois:

James Thomas and Rachel Celia Annie (Cline) Grayson were blest with the birth
of their first child, Sanford Franklin, on 13 February, 1885 at Boxley,
Hamilton County, Indiana.  In 1887 James and his young family moved to Corning,
Clay County, Arkansas.  It was there that Sanford grew to manhood and lived the
rest of his life.

Sanford Franklin, known as Frank, was a man who believed in God, supported his
country and knew the importance of getting his education.  In 1900, he joined
the Corning Methodist Church where his parents attended church.  Frank was a
member of the first graduating class of Corning High School in 1903.  In order
to support his country Frank joined the Corning Unit, Arkansas National Guard.
He was fortunate enough not to be called overseas during the First world War.

Frank met his future wife in a soda shop.  When they were married, he was 32
and his wife, Miss Leona Elizabeth Handwerk, was 18.  They were united in
marriage on 8 April 1917.  To this union was born three children: Ethel
Mildred, born 11 July 1919; James Lawrence, born 22 September 1921; and mable
Irene, born 2 September 1925.  All three children wrer born in Corning,
Arkansas.

Frank, as most men of his day, worked hard to support his family.  He worked
for Oliver and Company, Sheeks-Stevens Merchantile, and eventually engaged in
farming which he followed until his death.

After the death of his father, Sanford fought hard to keep he his brothers and
sisters from losing the farm which their father owned.  However they were un-
successful.  So Sanford eventually purchased the eighty acres which had been
lost.  Sanford's widow presently lives on that farm which James Thomas bought
in 1907.

Sanford Franklin Grayson died 19 June 1952 while tending his evening chores.
He suffered none in that his death from thrumboses was instant.  He was
interred in the Corning Cemetary, Corning, Arkansas.

The Clay County Courier printed the following passage after his death:  "In the
passing of Frank Grayson, we have lost a good man and a believer in Chistian
principles that guied him along the narrow pathway throughout his lifetime.
His friends, like all admirers of good men, numbered many.  His memory will
linger long in the minds of all who admired him for what he stood for, clean,
moral, honest living."
